Facial injury

Maxillofacial injuries, also known as facial trauma, can be devastating affecting the mouth, face and jaw. Most maxillofacial injuries are the result of accidents, playing sports, automobile or other transportation accidents, workplace mishaps, violent assaults or accidents at home.

At the hospital, a trauma team will be in place to treat and care for the patient. It is likely that one of the members will be an OMF surgeon. The surgical expertise and thorough understanding of the aesthetics and function of the mouth, teeth, jaws and face mean that an OMF surgeon is able to repair most injuries.

Among the most common injuries, ranging in severity, are fractures to the lower and upper jaws, the palate, cheekbones, eye sockets or any combination. These injuries can affect sight, speech, breathing and the ability to swallow.

Treatment

Often treatment will require hospitalization. From diagnoses through treatment, the OMF surgeon will coordinate efforts with other members of the medical team to ensure appropriate and timely treatment for optimal recovery

When it comes to facial injury, prevention is key. Make sure to follow safety precautions and use certified equipment to avoid injury.
